Beyond the ‘one nucleus, one whole genome’ rule

The ‘one nucleus, one whole genome’ rule has long defined nuclear organization in eukaryotes. Three fungi were recently uncovered to separate their haploid chromosomes into different nuclei, revealing an unexpected nuclear dimension. Here, we discuss how such chromosome partitioning may extend to other eukaryotes, formulating potential underlying mechanisms.
